Overseas workers, employers honored

The Association for Employers and Foreign Workers' Relations is holding its first award ceremony at National Taiwan Normal University on Sunday to present awards to outstanding employers and foreign caregivers.

"We are hoping that by holding this event, we can promote good working relationships between employers and workers, and leave the workers with a good impression of Taiwan after they have returned to their home countries," said Chuang An-chih (莊安琪), an advisor at the association.

The ceremony will be held on Dec. 14 and will run from 9:30am to 11:30am at the university's Education Building.

Five employers and 30 employees have been selected as award recipients.

According to the association, nominations were made by members of the public between March 1 and May 20. A total of 31 employers and 43 employees were nominated.

Each employer will receive a round-trip ticket to the country where his or her employee is from, while each worker will receive NT$5,000.

The association was founded on Nov. 1, 2001 to act as a bridge between employers and foreign workers, as well as to take care of workers in case of emergency.

"Relationships between employers and workers need to be reciprocal in nature in order to be healthy. This is a point our association wishes to stress," Chuang said.

According to statistics released by the Council of Labor Affairs on Oct. 31, there were a total of 297,254 foreign workers in the country.

Of these, 104,135 are Thais, 79,006 are Filipinos, 62,017 are Indonesians and 52,067 are Vietnamese. 5,198 of them work as caregivers in homes.

"We invite foreign workers to attend the ceremony this Sunday so they can see for themselves how they can be rewarded for their outstanding service," Chuang said.
