The Council of Indigenous Peoples yesterday held a ceremony commending 17 people and organizations for promoting Aboriginal welfare.
The winners included the Paiwan rock music group Power Station (動力火車), Amis baseball player Chang Tai-shan (張泰山) and the Mennonite Christian Hospital (門諾醫院) in Hualien, which has hired, trained and cared for large numbers of Aboriginal people.
Council chairman Chen Chien-nien (陳建年) praised the winners, saying they helped raise the status of Aboriginal people.
"Those who have won awards are powerful figures who have encouraged the development of Aboriginal communities," Chen said.
"It is because of your exceptional efforts that our countrymen have started to change their views about Aborigines, learn more about Aborigines and devote themselves to the replenishing of Aboriginal culture," he said.
The awards were presented by President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁).
One award recipient was a non-Aboriginal professor of medicine, Chung Wen-cheng (鍾文政), who has devoted his professional life to the study of parasitic infections in Aboriginal communities. Chung has spent a lengthy period conducting fieldwork around the country. He has also obtained funds from the Department of Health to set up medical stations for Aboriginal people in the Taipei area.
