Vice President Annette Lu (§f¨q½¬) said yesterday that the name of President Chen Shui-bian's (³¯¤ô«ó) running mate for next year's presidential election is still in the president's hands, and the name will not be revealed before Dec. 11.
Lu, addressing supporters in Tainan, said that the name of Chen's running mate will be announced the day following Chen's official nomination as the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's presidential candidate in the election slated for March 20 of next year.
Chen will be officially nominated on Dec. 10.
Although Lu didn't speak much about her future at her appearance at Southern Taiwan University of Technology, she spoke of the direction of Taiwan's educational system, which she said should focus on the combination of tradition and innovation, localization and globalization, and humanities and the sciences, as well as gender equality.
Lu said that due to globalization and the rapid flow of new information, traditional values will sometimes be doubted.
Lu urged young people to establish a more appropriate way of thinking toward life in the future; for example, they should focus on the pursuit of justice and morality, which Lu said would keep the earth peaceful.
