Soong's sister-in-law to be summoned in scandal

    By Jimmy Chuang
    STAFF REPORTER
    Sunday, Dec 07, 2003, Page 2

Taipei prosecutors yesterday said that Chen Pi-yun (陳碧雲), sister-in-law of People First Party Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜), will be the next person summoned regarding the Chung Hsing Bills Finance scandal (興票案).

"Soong said that Chen and his former aide Yang Yun-tai (楊雲黛) took care of his bank transactions," said Chen Hung-ta (陳宏達), spokesman for the Taipei District Prosecutors' Office. "Now that we have interrogated Yang and Soong, Chen Pi-yun will be summoned in the near future, but the date has not been decided yet."

Chen Hung-ta said that Soong described the entire scandal during an interrogation Friday, but he also told prosecutors that there were many details of the case he could not remember, including bank transactions. As a result, in order for prosecutors to obtain the information they seek, it is necessary for them to summon more individuals.

"Now that Soong has told us a lot, it will not be necessary for us to summon him again in the near future," Chen Hung-ta added.

As for any confrontation between Soong and former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝), Chen Hung-ta said that prosecutors will make arrangements whenever necessary.

"We have not planned to make such arrangements as of now," said Chen Hung-ta.

Ever since Lee told prosecutors that Soong had allegedly embezzled NT$360.88 million in party funds, forging party seals to open bank accounts in the party's name without authorization, Soong has continually challenged Lee by asking for a confrontation in court.

Meanwhile, Soong's defense counsel bought full-page advertisements in Chinese-language news-papers yesterday. They urged prosecutors to defend justice so politics will not interfere in the case.
