Taiwan is actively seeking to build a "new relationship" with Georgia, with its political transition offering Taiwan an opportunity to strengthen ties, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.

An election will be held on Jan. 4 following President Eduard Shevardnadze's resignation last month after huge public protests over the corruption and economic collapse that marked his 12-year rule.
Georgia's interim government has said the economic situation in the struggling ex-Soviet republic is dire.
A ministry official said they had been closely watching Georgia's political development for months.
"Political transition provides an opportunity to develop new diplomatic relationships," the official said.
Both the US and Russia have vied for influence in Georgia, which sits on a proposed route for an international pipeline intended to pump oil from Azerbaijan to Turkey and Western markets.
Taiwan does not have a representative office in Georgia, which maintains diplomatic ties with China. Very few Taiwanese immigrants have settled in the country, according to the ministry.
Taiwanese representative offices and agencies in countries neighboring Georgia have attempted to gain access to intelligence on the nation's political and economic situation, in the hope that a "foundation" for cooperation might be established.
