Woman indicted after calling dog cleaner than boy

IN HOT WATER: The woman's neighbor called the police after an argument ensued over her bringing her dog into a public hot spring

A woman from Peitou was indicted on a slander charge on Friday for saying to a neighbor: "My dog is a lot cleaner than your boy," in an incident in February at a public hot spring.

The father of the boy, identified only by his surname, Lin, had sought to prevent the woman, Chen Li-ling (³¯ÄR¬Â), from bringing her dog into a Peitou hot spring.

"Defendant Chen Li-ling's statement was regarded as an insult to the plaintiff," the indictment against Chen reads, "so she shall be prosecuted on the slander charge. However, since she did not have any criminal record, and her insult in public to the plaintiff did not involve a third party, her prosecution will be suspended for year."

In accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure(¦D¨Æ¶D³^ªk), the slander charge will automatically be dropped if Chen does not commit any crimes within the next 12 months.

The indictment by Shihlin prosecutors said that Chen brought her dog to the hot spring and was planning to bathe with it. When Lin told her that she should not have brought a pet to the hot spring, the two began to argue.

Lin felt insulted, called the police and decided to file a slander charge against Chen immediately. Chen was arrested when the police arrived.

According to the indictment, Chen denied making the alleged statement to Lin.

She insisted she had actually said, "My dog is a lot cleaner than naughty kids."

The testimony of witnesses, however, corroborated Lin's version, so prosecutors decided that Chen had in fact insulted Lin.

Lin and Chen live in the same apartment building in the Peitou area.
