Premier says that authorities are abiding by the law

Premier Yu Shyi-kun said yesterday that two Taiwan citizens detained recently for allegedly collecting intelligence for China are being questioned by law enforcement authorities in accordance with the law.

Answering question raised at the Legislative Yuan by opposition Chinese Nationalist Party Legislator Kwan Yuk-noan (關沃暖) about the incident, Yu said the suspected spies -- former Military Intelligence Bureau (MIB) officer Tseng Chao-wen (曾昭文) and incumbent MIB officer Chen Suei-chung (陳穗瓊) -- have harmed Taiwan's national security to a certain degree. He did not elaborate.

Members an ad hoc team comprised of prosecution and investigation officials as well as military officers in charge of Tseng and Chen's espionage case said yesterday that Tseng has been tailed over the last two years and that it is certain the harm Tseng's activities might have done to the country has been contained at the lowest possible levels.
