Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), chairwoman of the Mainland Affairs Council, yesterday urged China-based Taiwanese to be vigilant against worsening public order in that country.
Tsai said that as part of the processes of economic development, China is also witnessing an imbalance in society, with public disorder becoming more prevalent.
Tsai urged all Taiwanese maintaining business and investment operations in China to heighten their awareness of the seriousness of social problems there.
She made the remarks at the Legislative Yuan while commenting on the death of a Taiwanese businessman in Guangdong Province named Ho Ching-sheng (何進陞), who was reportedly murdered and had his arms and legs cut off.
Tsai said the Straits Exchange Foundation has been directed to handle this case and to provide assistance to the victim's family in handling their affairs.
Meanwhile, Tsai has also made plans to meet US officials next week in Washington to exchange views on matters pertaining to referendums and a new constitution for Taiwan.
Tsai is scheduled to fly to Washington next Wednesday to meet with Bush administration officials in charge of Asia-Pacific affairs to discuss President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) recent remarks about the Constitution and allowing the people to vote on major issues in referendums.
On Nov. 13 she is scheduled to take part in a cross-strait relations workshop and deliver a speech at a gathering organized by the Formosan Association of Public Affairs in Washington.
