Cool temperatures could continue until Wednesday

    By Chiu Yu-Tzu
    STAFF REPORTER
    Monday, Sep 22, 2003, Page 4

The first wave of autumnal northeast trade winds from northern China has arrived in Taiwan, chasing summer heat away and lowering average temperatures.

Today and tomorrow will be typical, cool autumn days, Central Weather Bureau forecasters said yesterday.

Forecasters said the cooler weather would continue until tomorrow or Wednesday. Temperatures in the north of the country could be as low as 23?C this morning and tonight.

Taiwan usually experiences cooler autumn weather after the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Yesterday morning the daytime temperature in Taipei was about 30?C, which was three to four degrees lower than the preceding week.

Forecasters said that the weather in offshore areas, including Penghu and Matsu, would be rainy today and tomorrow. Showers are expected in northern and eastern counties, including Taoyuan, Taipei, Ilan and Hualien, over the following days. Torrential rains are possible.

Forecasters said yesterday that Typhoon Choiwan would be heading for southern Japan. It should have no impact on the weather in Taiwan.
