President Chen Shui-bian (³¯¤ô«ó) yesterday praised the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families -- one of the best known charity organizations in the country -- as a social role model for people to emulate.
Chen said the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families has endeavored to help orphans and broken families over the past two decades based on the four principles of loving care, Christian love, prompt relief and assistance, and professional expertise.
Having served more than 120,000 children, helping them to lead normal lives, the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families is a good example of cooperation between the government and the private sector, Chen said.
The president made the remarks at the Presidential Office to staff members of the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families.
The charity, established by a group of private philanthropists from the US, has helped orphans find new homes and abused children to be resettled in safer environments through its "antennae" which reach far and wide and through its diverse and sophisticated operational network, Chen said.
The Taiwan Fund for Children and Families became a completely Taiwan-financed organization in 1985.
With its operations getting larger, Chen said, the charity organization has expanded abroad in recent years to help foreign orphans or children from poor families be adopted by Taiwanese parents or find foster homes here.
The Taiwan Fund for Children and Families, as well as other major charity organizations such as World Vision Taiwan and the Buddhist Compassionate Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, have commendably spread Taiwan's love to people in every corner of the world, Chen said.
