Taipei City donated two decommissioned fire engines to Nicaragua and Guatemala yesterday at a ceremony held at City Hall.
Deputy Taipei Mayor Bai Hsiu-hsiung (¥Õ¨q¶¯) presented the keys of the engines to Nicaraguan Ambasador Luis Wong and Guatemalan Ambassador Manuel Ernesto Galvez at the ceremony.
Bai said that although the fire engines were retired due to having completed 14 years of service as stipulated in regulations, they are still in good condition. The city government therefore decided to donate them to the nation's allies, he added.
Thanking the city government for the donation, Wong said that the Nicaraguan government has decided to assign its fire engine to Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, which maintains sisterhood ties with Taipei.
Galvez said that the donation illustrates the close relations between the Taiwan and Guatemala. He said the donated fire engine will be assigned to Amatitlan, a satellite city of Guatemala City.
