No water restrictions yet for Taipei

Taipei City Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (°¨^¤E) said yesterday that the city government will not introduce water rationing before the end of this month despite the continuing dry weather.

However, he called on the city's residents to conserve water.

The precipitation in the north last month was very low at only 36.5mm, which constitutes only 14 percent of the total measured in the same period last year.

The water storage level at the Feitsui Reservoir, which supplies water to Taipei City, stood at two meters below the 141m minimum limit.

The Shihmen Reservoir in Taoyuan County started cutting its irrigation-water supply by half from yesterday. Water supply to farms will be turned on only every five days. The reservoir's water level stood at 216.07m, only 6m above its critical limit. More restrictions are expected if it doesn't rain soon.

Elsewhere, Keelung City tightened its water rationing from Sat-urday, stopping non-essential use of water by grounding street-washing trucks and turning off water fountains. Water supply to swimming pools in the city has also been cut by 20 percent.

The Hsinshan Reservoir, which supplies water to Keelung City, only has 4.24 million tonnes of water left and may run completely dry next month if no more rain falls.
