Drugs seized in police sting in north

Police seized a large cache of counterfeit and banned drugs in several northern cities and counties yesterday.

The seized goods are estimated to have a street value of more than NT$1 billion, police said, adding that this is believed to be the largest cache of illegal drugs ever seized in a single raid in Taiwan.

Eight people suspected of involvement in the production of counterfeit brand-named drugs and contraband drugs were arrested in midnight raids at makeshift labs in Keelung, Taipei, Taipei County, Taoyuan County and Miaoli County.

Acting on a tip-off, Keelung police officers launched the raid around midnight under the leadership of Taipei prosecutors.

The seized goods include more than 1 million tablets of counterfeit Viagra and the weight-loss drug Reductil as well as nearly 2 million pills of the second-grade contraband drug MDMA and various "rape" drugs. Also confiscated was a variety of drug-production equipment and semi-finished products.

Lee Su-ching (§õ¸v²M), the suspected mastermind behind the drug-trafficking ring, told police that they planned to take advantage of the current summer vacation to sell the illegal drugs to local students or export the products to Southeast Asian nations.

Police said they will make further investigations to bring other ring members to justice.
