President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) yesterday spoke words of encouragement on behalf of Taichuang City Mayor Jason Hu (胡志強), saying that his ability surpasses that of Taipei City Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and other KMT political stars and that the DPP government supports Hu's administration.
"Why did Mayor Hu rank third after Ma and Taoyuan County Commissioner Chu Li-lun (朱立倫), " Chen said during an inspection tour in central Taiwan yesterday, "Why is it that Hu was not rated number one?"
The public and the media use "Ma-Li-Chiang" (馬立強, three characters taken from the names of Ma and Chu and Hu), or "high horsepower" to describe the three KMT local government chiefs. Hu's Chinese name is Hu Chih-chiang.
"I believe that it should be called `Chiang-Li-Ma' rather than `Ma-Li-Chiang,' and if all residents of central Taiwan expect to have a powerful government, we should put Hu first," Chen said.
The president made his remarks while presiding over a groundbreaking ceremony in central Taiwan science-based industrial park yesterday. He stressed that the ceremony represented his success in realizing all three promises to Taichuang residents, made during his year 2000 presidential campaign.
The president said that Hu should serve as his witness to prove the DPP government's efficient performance, saying that A-bian's administration is reliable, not incapable.
"I expect Mayor Hu, who has witnessed the ceremony, to tell the public, especially those who have continued to criticize us, that the central government has actually realized my main policies in promoting Taichung City, including drawing up the third industrial park, the third international airport, and upgrading the city to the status of a special municipality," Chen said.

The president then vowed that the DPP government will continue to assist Taichung to become the No. 1 city in the future.
"I hope that Taichung will have a new freeway, a new international art center= and a new railway system, which should be constructed entirely above ground," Chen said.
