The country's ambassador to the Vatican, Raymond Tai (À¹·ç©ú), tendered his resignation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, the Central News Agency reported.
In his resignation, the 69-year-old ambassador said he had made great efforts to maintain the nation's relations with the Holy See during his more than six years in the job.
He said that he had accomplished his task and therefore wished to resign.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Eugene Chien (²¤S·s) yesterday praised Tai's achievements, saying that he was a very good ambassador.
Before becoming ambassador, Tai had been director of the KMT's Cultural Affairs Department and spokesperson and deputy secretary-general of the Presidential Office.
His resignation has attracted great media attention because first lady Wu Shu-chen (§d²Q¬Ã) recently returned from a nine-day European tour, which included a visit to the Holy See.
