Pan-blue lawmakers say You is not from Hualien

You Ying-lung, the DPP's candidate in the Hualien County commissioner by-election, holds up a chart explaining his campaign platform during an event yesterday. The poster says ``A change in generations: Just give me two years, and I'll give you a `different' Hualien''

PFP Legislator Chiu Yi (邱毅) yesterday morning asked the Central Election Commission to revoke the candidacy of You Ying-lung (游盈隆) in the Hualien County commissioner race saying that he is not a Hualien resident.

"We seriously demand that Mr. You should immediately quit the Hualien race," said the PFP lawmaker.

Citing Article 146 of the Criminal Code, which regulates elections, Chiu said that You has been working in Taipei as a college professor and government officials, which means, according to Chiu, that You is not eligible to campaign for the Hualien by-election.

Showing a Prosecutor's Office document that showed a case of 502 voters registered in Hualien who allegedly reside in Matzu, PFP Legislator Tsao Yuan-chang (曹原彰) said that "the only difference between these 502 people and You is that You is a candidate."

KMT legislative whip Liu Cheng-hung (劉政鴻) also demanded the Ministry of Justice to launch an investigation into the candidacy of You right away.

"I believe voters in Hualien will definitely not want a non-resident to be their leader," Liu said, insisting that You's candidacy is not justified and not convincing.

Chiu even fired a volley against You saying that "You is a typically arrogant Taipei resident, and he's been looking down on people in Hualien for its undeveloped democracy."

However, the Hualien County Election Commission later responded to the complaints by saying that once You's household registry was listed in Hualien over four months ago and therefore he be absolutely eligible as a candidate.

"You's household registration has been here in Hualien for six years, which means his candidacy is totally beyond doubt," the commission said.
