Minister of Economic Affairs Lin Yi-fu (ªL¸q¤Ò) hailed Taiwan's removal yesterday from a World Health Organization (WHO) travel advisory list and vowed to revive the nation's trade and economic activities to the levels enjoyed prior to the outbreak of SARS.
Although the nation's SARS situation has markedly improved, Lin said consumer confidence remains eroded and needs to be boosted. He added that his ministry is poised to invite foreign investors, foreign trade associations and overseas Taiwanese businesspeople to come to Taiwan as part of a series of trade and investment promotion packages for the post-SARS era.
As the TAIEX has rebounded to its pre-SARS level of the middle of March, Lin said the objective of his ministry is to attract back at least 80 percent of the clientele that used to frequent major commercial and business districts across the country.
According to Lin, the spread of SARS has seriously affected the tourism, travel and transport industries as well as normal trade and commercial activities.
Many international trade fairs originally slated to be held in the second half of this year have been either delayed or canceled, he noted, adding that he is optimistic that Taiwan's removal from the WHO travel-advisory list will give a boost to domestic businesses.
