Though pan-blue leaders have repeatedly stated confidence in their alliance, some senior KMT members yesterday shared their distrust of PFP Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜) and even warned Soong not to override KMT Chairman Lien Chan (連戰).
Since the media reported last week that there was a secret deal between Lien and Soong to ensure Soong's authority in future political developments, some KMT members, who have been regarded as followers of former party chairman Lee Teng-hui (李登輝), have been more vocal in stating their distrust of Soong.
"The KMT should not allow a double-crosser to return to the party and try to become chairman," said KMT Legislator Chen Hung-chang (陳宏昌). "If the day comes [when Soong becomes KMT chairman], I believe that a lot of KMT heavyweights will leave the party.
"I urge Mr. Soong to properly play his role and serve his duty, which means that Soong, as running mate of Lien, should make an all-out effort to assist Lien instead of just showing his own ambition," Chen said.
KMT Legislator Tseng Tsai Mei-tso (曾蔡美佐) said Soong's performance and tough tone have upset the public.
"Serving as Lien's deputy, Soong should understand that his job is to respect Lien and speak less, show up less and, more importantly, stop manipulating the legislative process," she said.
Another KMT heavyweight said he feared for the party's future because of Soong's dominating style, adding the KMT seems to have gradually lost its autonomy.
"It is very important that the KMT and Chairman Lien clearly demonstrate that we are the boss," said KMT Legislator Chen Chien-chih (陳健治), a former speaker of the Taipei City Council who had attacked then mayor Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁).
President Chen, however, made a private visit to Chen Chien-chih last week to express his concerns about the KMT lawmaker's health.
The interaction between them has raised speculation that Chen Chien-chih plans to shift his support to the green camp.
