Former president Lee Teng-hui (§õµn½÷) knew nothing about his political confidant Liu Tai-ying's (¼B®õ^) alleged wrongdoings during Liu's term as KMT treasurer, TSU Legislator Chen Chien-ming (³¯«Ø»Ê) said yesterday.
Chen's comments came two days after Liu was charged by prosecutors for a number of crimes ranging from corruption to breach of trust.
Chen said Lee addressed himself to policy-making but seldom interfered with his subordinates' dealings and that it was impossible for him to know just what Liu might have been up to.
Liu, who was named by Lee as the head of the KMT Business Management Committee between 1993 and 2000, was accused by prosecutors of abusing his office to line his own pockets by funneling KMT funds into loss-making companies as loans or investments in exchange for kickbacks.
Many of the companies eventually collapsed and the KMT suffered great losses. Nevertheless, prosecutors have estimated Liu gained around NT$1 billion.
Although Liu and Lee were of the same party and Liu could not have had the political connections that he did without the former president's trust, Liu acted on his own without the knowledge of Lee, Chen said.
Chen said Lee would like to answer prosecutors' questions about Liu's other alleged irregularities, but has been afraid that he wouldn't be of much help in their investigation because even as a former KMT chairman, he did not monitor each party official's daily activities.
