Mayor scolds KMT for defending five cheating cadets

    By Brian Hsu

Taichung Mayor Jason Hu (J§Ó±j) yesterday criticized certain KMT legislators for defending five army academy cadets who were recently expelled for cheating on their examinations.

"Cheating is cheating. There is no excuse for such behavior. It is not proper for several legislators of our party to speak for these expelled cadets," Hu said.

Hu made the remarks yesterday during an interpellation session of the City Council. He was speaking in response to a statement by a councilor on the decline of morality in the country, as was amply demonstrated by the cadets.

He agreed with the councilor's concern about the situation, at the same time condemning the lawmakers' decision to call press conferences to speak in defense of the cadets.

Kwan Yuk-noan (Ãö¨U·x), one of the lawmakers who Hu criticized indirectly, defended himself by saying he was not speaking for the five cadets and that he was just asking the academy to give them a chance to turn over a new leaf.

"Hu might not understand the whole point of the matter. I am asking the army academy to reconsider its decision. I am not saying the five cadets' behavior is right," Kwan said.

"As a matter of fact, the academy might not be fully justified in its decision to expel the cadets, as similar offenses in the past were not punished as severely," he said.

"Besides, the five cadets were not caught red-handed in the act of cheating. Small scraps of notes found with them were not put to use at all inside the examination hall," he said.

Kwan's defense of himself and the five cadets might not be of any use, no matter how persuasive it is.

The academy seems determined to stick to its decision to make an example of the five by nullifying all their examination results and expelling them.
