Experts, officials leap to defense of government

"They have been angry about being surrounded by Taiwanese media," Chiu said. "They feel they have been treated inhumanely. I have to keep apologizing."

Meanwhile, a photographer assigned to take pictures of Taipei City Mayor Ma Ying-jeou's (馬英九) daily activities was sent to hospital yesterday morning with a fever.

His temperature rose above 38?C, but he had no other symptoms of SARS such as coughing or abnormalities on his chest X-ray, the Taipei City Government said.

To be on the safe side, however, the government has ordered four other employees who share an office with him to stay at home for 14 days.

Ma was declared safe because the photographer is with him usually only outside.
