"There is only one suspect. He was planning to rob all the cash at the counter but ended up getting away with only NT$120,000," said a senior police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, from the Taipei City Police Department's Chungcheng Second Precinct's Criminal Investigation Section.
Police officers said that the bandit, dressed in a blue rain coat and wearing no mask, walked into the bank, yelled loudly and asked clerks to hand him all the cash at the counter.
According to the police, when the clerks did not comply, the suspect jumped over the counter and opened up a cash drawer.
He took as much money as he could grab and fled immediately. The entire robbery lasted about 30 seconds.
Before the suspect left, a bank security guard tried to stop him by fighting with him. However, the suspect overcame the guard and fled the scene on a scooter.
The entire robbery was clearly recorded by the bank's closed-circuit security video system, which provided clear pictures of the robber's face.
The suspect was described by witnesses as being in his twenties, about 172 cm tall and "a little fat."
As of press time yesterday, neither the police nor the bank had held any press conferences about the robbery.
