Zanadau drama continues as Hu sues his accuser

By Jimmy Chuang  /  STAFF REPORTER

China Development Industrial Asset Management Corp Chairman Benny Hu (胡定吾) yesterday filed a libel suit against Zanadau Development Corp majority shareholder Su Hui-chen (蘇惠珍) for her continuing allegations that Hu is involved in the Zanadau scandal.

"My client, Hu, was planning to forgive Su's false allegations now that prosecutors have indicted 10 people for the scandal and Hu is not one of the defendants. The prosecutors' decision proved his innocence," said Hu's lawyer, Fu Tsu-sheng (傅祖聲)

"However, he did not expect that Su would again falsely charge him with the same scenario on April 14, so he decided to sue her," Fu said.

In addition to the libel suit, Hu is asking for NT$100 million in compensation from Su.

Since the scandal was first made public last September, Su has insisted that Hu was deeply involved in the whole affair.

She has charged that Hu accepted a huge amount in bribes and kickbacks from her when she was still the vice president of Zanadau and trying to get financing of NT$9.5 billion from the China Development Industrial Bank.

Taipei prosecutors summoned Hu as a witness by on Nov. 27 last year but released him after a long interrogation.

Su has always insisted that Hu was guilty. On April 14, Su went to the National Police Administration's Criminal Investigation Bureau and turned in a package of what she claimed was "new evidence" to prove Hu's involvement in the case.

Su again charged that she paid Hu very generous commissions between 1996 and 1998. However, Su did not say exactly how much money she paid Hu.

Su said that she has been hoping to argue with Hu in court so that judges could determine who is telling the truth and who is lying.

"I would welcome his suing me because he will fail, since I have the evidence to prove him guilty," Su said.
