The Taiwan Medical Alliance (TMA) is planning to launch a petition in Taiwan to drum up greater public support for the government's efforts to join the World Health Organization (WHO), an official of the alliance said yesterday.
Wu Shu-min (吳樹民), TMA chairman and a national policy adviser to the president, said TMA has decided to sponsor the campaign for Taiwan's observer status in the world's top health organization and to seek stronger backing for the country's fight against SARS at a time when the whole world is under a grave threat from the epidemic.
Wu said the petition is aimed at forging a national consensus on the issue and making sure the public understands that Taiwan's long-time exclusion from the WHO is unfair and not humanitarian.
Wu said Taiwan needs to make greater efforts to win backing and understanding from countries around the world in order to achieve the goal.
