China delivers gang boss

One of the country's most wanted criminals Wu Tung-tang (吳桐潭) was repatriated from China yesterday in another display of cross-strait anti-criminal cooperation.

Wu Tung-tang (吳桐潭), 52, leader of the Sun Union, landed at Chiang Kai-shek International Airport yesterday afternoon, ending a decade-long search by the National Police Administration.

China's Guangdong Province arrested Wu in the city of Zhuhai on March 13 after he attempted to enter China from Thailand using a false visa.

The administration faxed information on Wu to Guangdong police to verify his identity after they informed it of his arrest.

Guangdong police delivered Wu to officials at Macau International Airport yesterday morning.

The administration, meanwhile, declined to give more details on its cooperation with Chinese authorities. However, it is believed that more criminals will be repatriated from China in the coming months.

Sun Union has allegedly been involved in 17 separate criminal cases since 1985. Wu founded and chaired the Sun Union in 1986 and been at the top of the country's most wanted lists since July 1990.

Wu's Sun Union split into two in 1994, becoming the "new" and "old" Sun Unions. Wu headed up the old affiliation and launched a number of attacks on members of the new faction.

According to the bureau, Wu yesterday denied all accusations against him and said that he had nothing to do with those cases. He emphasized that he has been away from Taiwan for years.

Su Lun-yang (蘇倫養), another senior member of the old Sun Union was arrested by Thai police and deported to Taiwan last October.
