Former head of security at the Presidential Office and DPP member Hsieh Fan-fan (
KMT and PFP county councilors in Ilan complained that her promotion reflected DPP favoritism.
As chief of the security department at the Presidential Office, Hsieh was in charge of security for both the Presidential Office and the presidential residence in Taipei. She was the first female presidential "bodyguard" and the first female chief of the president's security guards. She joined the DPP on Jan. 21.
"I have always reminded myself to do my job well. That's my motto," Hsieh said at a welcoming party at the Ilan County Police Station yesterday.
There are 23 county and city police headquarters under the National Police Administration (NPA). Deputy director-generals and director-generals of the NPA are drawn from their ranks.
But Ilan's KMT and PFP county councilors cried foul over Hsieh's appointment yesterday.
"There are many officers qualified for this post. Hsieh is definitely not the best candidate. But she was chosen because she is one of the few high-ranking DPP police officers," said Ilan County Council Speaker Chang Jian-rong (張建榮) of the KMT.
Hsieh said that she will not be bothered by criticism and will do her best to fulfill her duty.
In a press release, the NPA denied that favoritism played a part in Hsieh's selection. It said that her promotion followed a meeting between Director-General Wang Chin-wang (
"Everything was done in accordance with procedure," the press release said.
