Academia Sincia president Lee Yuan-tseh (李遠哲) said in Hong Kong yesterday he is convinced that the leaders on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are wise enough to handle cross-strait relations.
"I'm optimistic about the future of cross-strait relations. The people on both sides desire peace and stability. I believe that their leaders have enough wisdom to handle cross-strait issues," Lee said.
As to the opening of direct links, Lee said the two sides must hold face-to-face talks on such issues and cannot solely rely on the private sector to handle the negotiations.
Even though Beijing is still unwilling to negotiate direct links with Taipei at the moment, Lee said he is optimistic about the prospects for realizing this goal.
