Economic Affairs Minister Lin Yi-fu announced yesterday the establishment of a national anti-drought center and urged the public to conserve water because of an extreme scarcity of rainfall since last year.
Lin made the remarks after being briefed by Lee Tien-min, northern bureau chief of the Water Resources Agency, during an inspection of Shihmen Reservoir in northern Taiwan's Taoyuan County.
Lin said the anti-drought campaign will kick off earlier than expected and added that the task force will call its first meeting on Wednesday to discuss and coordinate joint measures for Taipei and the rest of the island.
Chen Kun-hsien, vice director of the Water Resources Agency, said that the first of a set of four-phase restrictive measures might be imposed following the meeting, which will slash water supplies to the general public during off-peak hours. Water supplies for civic and industrial use will remain normal and operations at the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park will not be affected.
