COA stepping up customs checks at Kaohsiung airport

CNA , KAOHSIUNG

The Council of Agriculture will tighten quarantine checks at the Kaohsiung International Airport Customs due to the large number of people returning from China with goods prior to the Lunar New Year.

Anticipating that a large number of Taiwanese will return home via the "small three links" channel -- the council's Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIC) will impose stricter inspections on animal and plant products that may have been brought back by returning residents.

Ting Shan-lung (丁杉龍), director of BAPHIC's Kaohsiung office, said that in the past year some people in the south have tried to bring animal or plant products from China via Kinmen.

Ting said Taiwan cannot afford an increase in contamination of its livestock and farm sectors.
