Organ recipients celebrate gift of life with a party

By Melody Chen  /  STAFF REPORTER

Six patients celebrated their new lives at Taipei's Tri-Service General Hospital yesterday after receiving organs donated by a 56-year-old man, who died of a cerebral hemorrhage in November.

The man's family donated his heart, liver, kidneys and corneas. A hospital spokesman said the hospital would keep the man's name confidential.

An 86-year-old woman, surnamed Lin, received a cornea from the man. "I am so grateful. I can see my cute grandchild now," Lin said.

A 27-year-old man, surnamed Chen, had been a hemodialysis patient for eleven years. He received a kidney from the donor.

"I can finally say goodbye to the hemodialysis center. I can also eat some salty food now," Chen said.

"My work and studies were greatly troubled by my kidney problems. I had to go to the hemodialysis center three times a week before," Chen said.

Major General Chen Hung-yi (陳宏一), superintendent of the hospital, praised the anonymous donor. "The man signed an agreement to donate his organs before his death. He became brain dead after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage," Chen Hung-yi said.

He said the hospital's doctor Yu Dah-shyong (于大雄) led a medical team to simultaneously transplant the man's organs to six patients within eight hours of the man's death.

At the celebration party, the patients cut cakes together and expressed their deepest gratitude for the man.

A 56-year-old woman, surnamed Wu, received the man's heart and said that for the first time in six months, she was able to walk on her own.

All recipients of the man's organs signed their organ donation cards. "We do so to repay his love for us," they said.

Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) also joined the party. "I signed my organ donation card nine years ago," Ma said. "I signed it so that when I pass away my organs may be used to prolong other people's lives."
