DPP, TSU to train new leaders with political programs

By Lin Mei-Chun  /  STAFF REPORTER

The DPP and TSU will start their own training programs for human resources early next year with Ketagalan School and Lee Teng-hui School recruiting staff and looking for trainees.

Initiated by President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and former president Lee Teng-hui, both schools aim to cultivate well-rounded leaders for the country.

Chen floated the idea of founding the Ketagalan School before he took over chairmanship of the DPP in July.

Besides training leaders of the nation, the school will act as an interaction platform between executive officials and the social elite, allowing policies to be more thoroughly discussed before they are publicly declared.

Officials said that Ketagalan School will not be affiliated with the DPP. Seminars or panel discussions will be held on a regular basis, after the Lunar New Year, where government officials and trainees are expected to have a close interaction.

President Chen will be the school's founder, possible executive directors are DPP deputy secretary general Michael You, the chairman of the pro-DPP Taiwan Think Tank, Chen Po-chih (陳博志) and Chen Lung-chu (陳隆志), a scholar of international law.

As for the Lee Teng-hui school, TSU officials said the school will hold two training sessions after March for the nation's new political economic leaders when Lee, former chairman and managing director of the American Institute in Taiwan Nat Bellocchi, Chen Po-chih and former finance minister Shirley Kuo (郭婉容) are scheduled to give lectures.

TSU lawmaker Cheng Chen-lung (程振隆) said the purpose of the courses will not be restricted to fostering political and economic leaders -- the reinforcement of Taiwan's identity will also be a key goal.

The party is looking for a group of thirty people, irrespective of their political background, to start the first session.
