Some 150 scholars and experts from the US, Europe and Taiwan are in Taipei today to attend a two-day seminar on the Sept. 11 attacks on the US.

The seminar, sponsored by the Academia Sinica, will be held at the Academia's Institute of European and American Studies.

American Institute in Taiwan Director Douglas Paal will give the keynote address, a press release said.

Fifteen papers to be presented during the seminar focus on the external and internal repercussions of the Sept. 11 attacks, including the impact of the attacks on the US government and its foreign policy, the impact of US military innovations on transatlantic ties and the threat to civil liberties.

Delegates will also discuss the creation of new US federal agencies in the wake of Sept. 11 attacks, as well as the issue of terrorism and the international financial system.

Among those who will present papers at the seminar are Robert Sutter of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service; Ralph Cossa, president of the Honolulu-based think tank the Pacific Forum CSIS; Margo Bailey of American University's department of public administration and Sten Rynning of the University of Southern Denmark's department of political science.
