Battle lines drawn as campaign turns to underprivileged

By Sandy Huang  /  STAFF REPORTER

KMT Taipei City Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and DPP rival Lee Ying-yuan (李應元) yesterday spoke out on economic concerns as the countdown to Saturday's election continued.

While the Ma camp launched a series of campaign advertisement targeting the city's labor population, Lee outlined his economic proposals for single mothers and the unemployed with a pledge to lower the city's jobless rate from 4.9 percent to 3.5 percent.

Three advertisements were unveiled by Ma at a press conference in his campaign headquarters.

"Through these advertisements, we wish to ask the Taipei public to remind the ruling administration about Taiwan's current social problems by casting their votes for Ma," said Lai Shyh-bao (賴士葆), Ma's campaign spokesman.

Two ads spotlight Taiwan's unemployed while the other, citing a reference from a newspaper article, talked about the number of students whose families are unable to provide school meals.

"We call on all Taipei citizens to go to the polls on Dec. 7 and vote for Ma to express their discontent against the government on behalf of the unemployed and lower-income families," said Lai.

Meanwhile, Lee unveiled his economic package for the city's single mothers and jobless.

"Middle-aged unemployed and single mothers are underprivileged within an underprivileged population," said Lee. "If I am elected, I will work to open more job opportunities for them."

Lee pledged that he would provide monthly subsidies of up to NT$10,000 per worker to companies that hire unemployed workers between the ages of 35 and 50.

For single-mother families, Lee said that he would provide a monthly subsidy of NT$5,000 for each child aged 12 or under.
