Placido Domingo to perform duet with local singer

Internationally acclaimed tenor Placido Domingo will be joined on stage by Taiwanese diva Jody Chiang (¦¿¿·) during his return to Taiwan for a one-off concert on Friday next week.

Thirty-eight thousand fans are expected to go to the concert at Taipei's Municipal Stadium, which is co-sponsored by Taipei Times. Apart from sharing the stage with two of the world's leading sopranos, Cuban-Puerto Rican Ana Maria Martinez and China's Zhang Liping (±i¥ß¥), Domingo will be joined by Chiang for a duet version of the Taiwanese folk song Flowers On A Rainy Night.

According to a local Chinese-language newspaper, Hsu Po-yun (³\³Õ¤¹), CEO of New Aspect, one of the organizers, said that Domingo decided he wanted to sing together with Chiang after having listened to the CD's of several different Taiwanese female singers.

The newspaper reported that Chiang said she feels honored and is full of anticipation at the opportunity to share the stage with one of the world's three greatest tenors.

The report goes on to say that Chiang has never given a concert, and her reason for this is that she aims at perfection and gets nervous easily. She began getting nervous after she received the invitiation, and she is worrying about dizziness, her heart condition, and whether she will faint on stage.

She said that an invitiation from someone like Placido Domingo cannot be refused. She sings Taiwanese folk songs, and if she can place Taiwanese folk music on the world map, she will be very pleased.

Tickets cost between NT$800 and NT$6,000 and are available from Acer Ticketing Outlets nationwide. Domingo, Martinez, Zhang and Chiang will take to the stage of the Taipei Municipal Stadium at 10 Nanking E. Rd. at 7pm on Friday, Nov. 29.

Although tickets will be on sale at the venue on the evening of the performance, organizers advise people wanting ringside seats for this one-time event to purchase tickets well in advance.
