A local online company is offering people the chance to be king (or queen) for a day -- complete with a crown, scepter and a mahjong set made entirely out of gold.

The "Million Gold Crown Championship" is an computerized mahjong championship that will kick off on Nov. 15 and continue until Dec. 11. Every week, 12 winners will be selected from all the participants. After four weeks of competition, 48 winners will compete on Dec. 24 for the coveted golden prize.

At a press conference yesterday to promote the contest, a decorated vehicle carrying three pole-dance girls and nude model Lily Tien (田麗) was driven across the venue to mark at least one of the attractions of playing the company's computerized version of the classic game.

"From Nov. 16 to 30, these pole-dance spicy girls will be driven around Taipei City to play mahjong with anyone who is interested, " said Chou Mou-shyh (周謀式), the organizer of the championship.

"They will also appear on the weekend nights in the major night markets," Chou said.

Would-be participants can also simply sit in front of their home PCs and log onto the company's Web site to join the championship, according to Chou.

"But if you have the good fortune to become one of the 48 finalists, you will need to go to the New York, New York [shopping center in Taipei] on Christmas Eve to join the finale," Chou said.

The champion of the group competition will play a final mahjong game against the spokeswoman for the championship -- nude model Lily Tien.

"If you beat her, the golden outfit, worth NT$1 million, is yours," Chou said.

Second and third place winners will be awarded NT$100,000 and NT$50,000 respectively, according to Chou.

"We expect to draw 300,000 new online members through this championship. Currently 1 million rounds of mahjong are being played on our Web site daily," Chou said.

The company currently has 500,000 online members.
