Chad asks for Taiwan's help in collecting tarriffs

CNA , TAIPEI

Chad Minister of Finance Idriss Ahamat Idriss wants help from Taiwan regarding information on effective administration of customs tariff collection, Ministry of Finance officials said yesterday.

The officials said that during a meeting in Taipei, Idriss told Vice Minister of Finance Wang Te-san (王得山) that customs tariffs are a major source of tax revenue for Chad. Since his country is not efficient in checking and cracking down on tariff evasions, the result has been a huge loss in revenue.

In response, Wang promised his African visitor that he would do his best to provide assistance.

Finance officials said that Idriss conveyed the hope that Taiwan could provide technical assistance for the establishment of a customs tariff system, improve custom clearance procedures and better training for customs officials.

The officials noted that Taiwan's assistance to diplomatic allies has gone from agricultural, medical and infrastructure assistance to administrative, which they called a "creative" approach.
