A large plot of land was set aside yesterday in Chiku, Tainan County to be made into a conservation area for the black-faced spoonbill, an endangered migratory bird that travels to Taiwan for autumn and winter each year.

Su added that people will be prevented from entering the area to study, record, or collect animal and plant specimens.
During the time when black-faced spoonbills migrate to Taiwan, people will not be allowed to set up tents to photograph or videotape them.
However, if academic or educational researchers wish to enter the area for the collection of animals and plants, they will have to obtain prior approval from the governing authority. Local fishermen can engage in fishing operations that will have to be in accordance with related regulations between May and September, when black-faced spoonbills leave Taiwan.
Su expressed the hope that a management and research center for the black-faced spoonbills could be established within the protected area within six months.
The Taipei Department of Health yesterday said it has launched a probe into a restaurant at Far Eastern Sogo Xinyi A13 Department Store after a customer died of suspected food poisoning. A preliminary investigation on Sunday found missing employee health status reports and unsanitary kitchen utensils at Polam Kopitiam (寶林茶室) in the department store’s basement food court, the department said.
