President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and Honduran President Ricardo Maduro signed a joint communique yesterday, reaffirming their commitment to further boosting bilateral cooperation in various fields.
Both leaders also stated in the joint communique that they will work hand-in-hand to promote regional development and world peace.
After the signing ceremony, Chen and Maduro also exchanged views on matters of mutual concern.
Chen said relations between Taiwan and Honduras have become even closer through Maduro's just-concluded state visit.
Noting that Oct. 24 is United Nations Day, Chen said Taiwan has consistently upheld the basic UN principles of equality, freedom and peace, but Taiwan has been shut out of the UN since 1971. With its economic strength and democratic achievements, Chen said, Taiwan deserves a UN seat. "It is our hope that all of our diplomatic allies can support our bid to win UN membership," he said.
For his part, Maduro said his visit has been fruitful so far. "Members of my entourage are all impressed by Taiwan's vitality and prosperity. We have found new cooperative opportunities in agricultural, educational and economic fields," he said.
Maduro said the Honduran people are grateful for the assistance Taiwan has given to their country's development over the years. He also assured Chen that Honduras will continue its support for Taiwan's bid to join the UN.
