Pigeon poop no longer a problem for visitors to hall

Spokesmen for Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (台北國父紀念館) said yesterday that thanks to their new facilities, visitors will no longer have to worry about being hit by falling pigeon poop.

According to the spokesmen, hundreds of pigeons loved to stay on the beams around the building, especially at its front entrance where they are covered by its palatial roof.

However, these pigeons produced a lot of poop every day and the droppings not only polluted the environment but also hit visitors every now and then. Over time, these pigeons became a rather large nusiance for the hall's management.

"There was a time that we held an outdoor activity at our front entrance. Guess what? A pigeon dropped its excrement on a Cabinet member's head. We were so embarrassed then," said Chang Juei-pin (張瑞濱), the director of the hall.

Chang visited Venice, Italy in May of this year and decided to introduce an "Italian style anti-pigeon resolution" to Taipei.

The new technique was to imbed steel nails into the roof beams where the pigeons like to perch. Each of the nails is 13cm long.

Chang said that the construction was not difficult but still cost more than NT$800,000.

"First of all, workers needed to clean up all the stained excrement on the beams around the building before they could begin to imbed the nails into them," said Chang.

According to Chang, pigeons will fly away immediately when they step on the nails and feel the pain. In addition, pigeons love to move as a group and will never move alone.

As a result, when these pigeons realize that all the locations where they used to stay are now imbedded with nails, they won't come back anymore.

"These guys are smart. Soon they will realize that the roof will be the only safe place for them to stay and rest. And we won't have to worry about their excrement's hitting people and polluting the environment," he said.
