The Executive Yuan approved a draft law governing the elections of National Assembly members yesterday, proposing that the future National Assembly should have 300 delegates elected by proportional representation.
According to the draft, the elections of National Assembly members will follow the stipulation of the first article of the Additional Articles of the Constitution, which reads: "Three hundred delegates should be elected by proportional representation to the National Assembly within three months of the expiration of a six-month period following the public announcement of a proposal by the Legislative Yuan to amend the Constitution or alter the national territory, or within three months of a petition initiated by the Legislative Yuan for the impeachment of the president or the vice president."
The draft also suggests that parties should field candidates for the national assembly and independent candidates should form an election alliance with at least 20 members to participate in the elections.
To protect the rights and interests of weaker groups, the draft says, at least one of every four elected assembly members should be a woman.
One of every 30 elected assembly members should be an Aborigine.
The draft proposal will be forwarded to the Legislative Yuan.
