A senior Taiwanese official yesterday encouraged Hong Kong and China to cooperate with Taiwan in developing their information technology (IT) industries because "each region has its own advantages."
Ho Mei-yueh (¦ó¬üªµ), vice chairwoman of the Cabinet-level Council of Economic Planning and Development, made the remark yesterday in Hong Kong while attending the Hong Kong Taiwan Economic Forum.
"Taiwan could play the role of contributor in creating a cross-strait triple-win situation," Ho said in her speech.
According to her, "Taiwan specializes in the research and development of IT industry, and Hong Kong has sufficient capital, while China's broad market as well as its low-cost land and labor can contribute to the industry. Thus the three regions should cooperate with each other."
More than 100 people from Hong Kong and Taiwan's business circles attended the seminar, including Taiwan's former vice premier, Liu Chao-shiuan (¼B¥ü¥È), who currently serves as the Chairman of Taiwan Monte Jade Association; Jason Chen (³¯«T¸t), general manager of Intel Asia-Pacific, and business experts and scholars.
Ho stressed that, in terms of IT industry, 14 of Taiwan's products are currently among the top products in the world in terms of their export value.
Ho estimated that the value of the Internet industry might reach US$8 trillion, "Taiwan can handle this market based on the technology that we have since we have successful experience in personal computer products," she said.
"It is a good opportunity for Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China to cooperate strategically to share in the growing internet market."
Echoing Ho's point of view, Liu said that the advantages of Hong Kong and Taiwan are different. Taiwan is good at developing new technologies while Hong Kong serves as a great platform for trade.
