CDC officials say Taiwan prepared for bioterror attack

STAFF WRITER

As the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the US approached yesterday, senior officials said that Taiwan was well-prepared to fight against bioterrorism or an attack on nuclear power plants.

According to Center of Disease Control (CDC) officials, there were 104 reports of suspicious international mail or possible Anthrax virus cases in the last eight months.

Mail packages aimed at disseminating propaganda on Islam were addressed to the National Science Council and foreign organizations in Taiwan, CDC officials said.

However, they said that tests had proven that no packages containing Anthrax had been received.

Meanwhile, several agencies have warned that nuclear power plants could become targets for terrorists. In the US, security was tightened around US nuclear plants ahead of the July 4 Independence Day celebrations.

Officials in Taiwan have said if nuclear power plants were attacked, immediately shutting them down would prevent radiation fallout, according to officials of from Atomic Energy Council.

The Taiwan Power Company, which operates Taiwan's three nuclear power plants, has ordered the establishment of crisis management task forces at its plants to work closely with local police departments, the army and the Coast Guard Administration if such a crisis occurred.

The staff at the plants have been given special training on how to respond to possible terrorist attacks.
