The Executive Yuan will establish a committee headed by Premier Yu Shyi-kun to deal with the increasing problem of juvenile delinquency, Cabinet sources said yesterday.
The decision was made at a Cabinet meeting on ways to prevent youth crime.
Yu said at the meeting that the government has been very concerned about the situation and he has called on local governments to redouble their efforts to deal with the problem. "Today's meeting would have been unnecessary if the local governments had been efficient enough to solve the problems," he added.
One proposal that Yu put forward was that punishment be increased for adults who lure teenagers into committing crimes or joining gangs that engage in unlawful activities. Another proposal by the premier was to have authorities first target establishments that sell pornography and places where it is understood on the street that drugs are available.
