Liao said Rosa Ergui had raised Iruan for most of Iruan's life and that more attention to her feelings should be paid.
"Taiwan is better off materially than Brazil, which explains why the boy likes Taiwan more -- but we cannot violate the law," Liao said.
Liao stressed that because many Taiwanese still value a patriarchal society and believe in old-fashioned values, it is understandable that Iruan's uncle thinks the boy has to be Taiwanese simply because the boy's father is Taiwanese.
