Mayor of Taichung City, Jason Hu, returns to Taiwan

By Monique Chu  /  STAFF REPORTER , WITH AGENCIES

Taichung City Mayor Jason Hu (胡志強) returned to Taiwan late yesterday evening after falling ill during his visit to the US.

Hu was greeted upon his arrival at the CKS airport yesterday evening by his close aide Lin Mu-hung (林沐弘), some of his supporters and Taichung City Deputy Mayor Hsiao Jia-chih (蕭家旗).

Hu then returned to Taichung City after his arrival at the Taoyuan airport. The mayor is slated to meet with the press at 10:30am today at the Evergreen Laurel Hotel, in downtown Taichung, Lin told the Taipei Times.

After having stayed in San Francisco longer than expected due to his illness, Hu promised the press that he would slow down his pace when he returned to work.

"After I came down with the illness this time, I came to realize I should slow down a little bit, I should not try to take care of every single thing personally," said Hu prior to heading for Taiwan.

Hu advised all political figures and business leaders to pay attention to their health and family and cautioned them to work efficiency.

Hu also said he appreciated the influx of concerns about his health, such as a letter from Premier Yu Shih-kun, as well as telephone calls from PFP Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜) and KMT Chairman Lien Chan (連戰).

Hu said doctors in Taiwan had diagnosed that he had "autonomous dysfunction" prior to his leaving for the US. Since he left for the US on Aug. 9, severe headaches and dizziness had forced him to undergo a three-day intensive health-checkup after his arrival at the US.

But the former foreign minister stressed that he would still try to do a good job as the mayor of Taichung City.
