Hsu appears optimistic that the ethnic problem will lessen with time and that the new generation who are descendents of the goa-seng-lang will be more willing to identify Taiwan as their homeland.
"I think within five to 10 years' time the term `mainlander' will become blurred and that it will be hard to tell whether you are a mainlander or not," Hsu said.
