National Taiwan Normal Univer-sity (NTNU) and Bangkok-based Chulalongkorn University signed a cooperation pact yesterday aimed at promoting Chinese-language teaching.
NTNU President Chien Maw-fa (²Zµo) and Chulalongkorn University President Tatchai Sumitra inked the accord at Thailand's oldest university, with both sides agreeing to train high-end Chinese-language teachers by jointly offering a special masters program at the two universities.
In addition to classes in Thailand on Chinese language and culture, students will be able receive a month-long intensive course at NTNU.
Chien said that it is the first time NTNU has clinched this kind of agreement with a Southeast Asian university and he expressed hope that his university can cooperate with other schools in the region and the rest of the world.
NTNU has one of the most well-known Chinese teaching centers in Taiwan and has trained many famous people, including ambassadors and academics, Chien said, noting that the center is NTNU's best weapon for forging international cooperation projects.
Chien also said he favors the idea of setting up co-operative ventures with the private sector to train Chinese-language teaching staff overseas in order to expand the influence of the Chinese language.
