Internet addiction, is it a problem?

After local media began elaborating on the potential hazards of Internet indulgence by pointing out that over 300,000 Internet users in Taiwan may have Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), Dr. Wang Hao-wei, a renowned writer, psychiatrist and a social critic, told 'Taipei Times' staff reporter Chang Yu-jung that going online for long hours could actually be a course of treatment for people with difficulties in handing interpersonal relationships. In the interview, Wang talked about his views on IAD and commented on the set of eight questions designed by the US cyber-psychologist, Dr. Kimberly Young, to examine whether a person has the tendency to suffer from the disorder

It is useless to ban the Internet just because we are afraid that our children might become addicted. Even without the Internet, these youngsters will still become addicted to other things.
