Truck accident kills 7 workers

STAFF WRITER

A heavily loaded flatbed truck accidentally dropped its cargo and killed seven Taipower workers yesterday while the driver was making a turn to avoid crashing into a Taipower vehicle on Shoushan Rd, Taipei County.

The workers were trying to fix an electric pole when the accident occurred. Seven workers were killed and one was hospitalized and is in critical condition.

The accident took place at 2am yesterday, when nine Taipower workers were fixing a power pole that was damaged in another traffic accident, police say.

The workers were replacing the damaged pole. Being absorbed in their work and deafened by their machinery, the workers did not notice the truck approaching.

As a result of the accident, two utility trucks containing nine workers were swept to the side of the mountain road. The workers on the scene were either caught between the fence of the road and the trucks or trapped beneath it.

The driver of the flatbed says he was making a turn when the two Taipower trucks appeared in his sight.
