KMT wants to convene legislature

ON THE ATTACK Riled by the president's latest comments, the KMT said an extraordinary assembly should be convened, but even the PFP disagreed

DPP caucus convener Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) said his party would go along with anything that meets procedural requirements.

But he added he failed to grasp what the KMT intends to accomplish during the proposed session.

DPP lawmaker Trong Chai (蔡同榮), who has lobbied hard for a referendum law, said President Chen canceled a meeting with him today.

Earlier, Chai and allies said they would give top priority to pushing for the passage of a bill that would allow the people to decide major policy disputes through a popular vote.

The lawmaker said he would not raise the issue in today's DPP Central Standing Committee meeting to avoid embarrassing Chen, following the outcry at home and abroad.
